Jane Austen Mystery

I love all things Austen. I´ve read all the books countless times, seen all the films, the tv shows, the websites…
So when I read about Jane and the unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor: Being the First Jane Austen Mystery, I figured I´d give it a go. I like Austen, I like a nice whodunnit, let´s roll!

It´s not as bad as it might have been, it´s been well researched, a lot of effort has gone into it, but the long and the short of it is, it kinda blows. Jane Austen the author has no qualities to recommend her as a private dick, other than her witty observations, and the author of this murder mystery doesn´t use Jane´s observational skills.

Perhaps a Miss Marple of approach, where Austen spots little, seemingly insignificant details that elude others and prove to be crucial would have worked, but in this book, Jane just hurls along, stumbling on one corpse after the other, and the needlessly convoluted plot hinges on pirates and spies. It lacks subtlety and, alas, wit.
